Lexile Information

How do I find a book by Lexile?

There are many factors that affect the relationship between reader & text including content, age appropriateness, reader interests, suitability of the text & text difficulty.

The Lexile measure of a book—a measure of text difficulty—is a good starting point …. the Lexile measure should never be the only factor considered when selecting a book.

Find a book in your lexile range by using the following lists:

0 – 50
Beginning readers and picture books for early readers.

50 – 99
These are books that are just right for the child who is ready to explore beyond the earliest Beginning Readers.

100 – 199
Slightly more challenging, with more complex words and more words on each page, these are good selections for the improving reader.

200 – 299
This range includes more challenging readers and some early chapter books, for children at about a 1st/2nd grade reading level.

300 – 399
Is your reader ready for chapter books? Take a look at these books (about 2nd Grade reading level.)

400-499
Books for stronger 2nd and 3rd grade readers. Remember to limit your results further (on the left of the page) to find the books that best suit the reader!

500-599
The books on this list will generally suit a child with about a 3rd grade reading level. Remember to limit your results to narrow the selection to topics and genres the reader prefers!

600-699
Books in this Lexile list range from 3rd to 4th grade reading level.

700-799
This list includes books generally suitable for 4th and 5th grade readers, and a few series titles that younger readers will want.

800-899
Books within this Lexile range tend to fall in the 5th to 7th grade reading level. This list includes only books found in our Juvenile Fiction (JFIC) collection.

900-999
There are still lots of books to choose from! These will be challenging enough for the advanced reader, yet still appropriate for kids up through grade 5.

1000-1099
Even at this Lexile range there are a ton of great books to choose from for the advanced reader. These will all be found in our JFIC collection, and so are typically appropriate for kids through grade 5.

1100-1199 (Includes Fiction and Non-Fiction)
Fewer titles are found for children in this Lexile range and above. Ask a librarian for help in finding more titles that would be appropriate for a young but advanced reader

1200 to 1500 (Includes Fiction and Non-Fiction)
There are fewer books written for younger children on this list, as books in this Lexile range tend to be written for adults or teens. We have included non-fiction to offer more choices. In this search, parents should review the resulting titles in order to determine suitability for their child. This list may include adult and teen titles that may not be appropriate for every younger reader.

Adjust the results to the reader:
Narrow the results of these searches by topic, content or genre, etc. on the left-hand side of the search results page.

You can create your own list using the library’s online catalog by clicking on “Advanced Search” (under the search box at the top of the page) and then entering the following into the “Enter your Advanced Search Here” box:

lexile:[800 TO 900]

(Replace “800” and “900” with *your* lexile range.)

Please be aware that Lexile-only searches will include books for ALL ages, abilities, and maturities. These lists may include adult titles. Reading levels/lexile ranges do not measure a book’s content or appeal – they can’t guarantee you will like a particular book, or that it will be appropriate for you.

Important lexile information:
An independent agency is responsible for scanning books and assigning lexiles. Not all books have been scanned, and, as a result, not all books have lexiles. If there is a particular book that you want to read and you want to know its lexile, you can check to see if it has a lexile on lexile.com. If your book does not have a lexile, you can sometimes “guesstimate” what it *might* be by checking to see if any of the author’s other books have a lexile.

If you need to read a book in your lexile range for an assignment, please check with your teacher before committing to a title that doesn’t have a lexile. If you want to read it anyway – GREAT! But, pick a different book for the assignment. Consider reading books outside of your lexile range FOR FUN! Reading is all about fun. (We think so, anyway.)
